The HP AutoRAID hierarchical storage system

by John Wilkes, Richard Golding, Carl Staelin, Tim Sullivan - ACM Transactions on Computer Systems , 1995
"... Configuring redundant disk arrays is a black art. To configure an array properly, a system administrator must understand the details of both the array and the workload it will support. Incorrect understanding of either, or changes in the workload over time, can lead to poor performance. We present a ..."

excellent storage cost for inactive data, at somewhat lower performance. The technology we describe in this paper, known as HP AutoRAID, automatically and transparently manages migration of data blocks between these two levels as access patterns change. The result is a fully redundant storage system

Attribute-Managed Storage

by Richard Golding, Elizabeth Shriver, Tim Sullivan, and John Wilkes , 1995
"... ation to configure a disk array well, and that initial installation can be a timeconsuming process. This is all made much worse if the system must adapt to changing workloads. The increased load on, and sophistication required of, administrators invariably means that the systems being constructed ar ..."

with the HP AutoRAID system [Wilkes95], which can dynamically select RAID layout policies based on usage, indicates that both performance and ease-ofuse can be improved by doing so. If a system is to be self-managing, it must be given a set of goals to manage towards. Our approach is to do this in two parts

De-indirection for Flash-based Solid State Drives

ii iv vTo my parents vi vii Acknowledgements I would first and foremost extend my whole-hearted gratitude to my advisors, An-drea Arpaci-Dusseau and Remzi Arpaci-Dusseau. Andrea and Remzi are the reason that I had the opportunity for this exceptional Ph.D. journey. To this day, I still re-member the moment when they took me as their student and the joy and hope in my heart. Andrea and Remzi have showed me what systems research is like and how much fun and challenging it can be. Before this journey with them, I had always liked and believed in the beauty of mathematics and theory. My initial interest in systems research happened when I took Remzi’s Advanced Operating Systems
