THE apparently widespread tendency of subjects to put their best foot forward when responding to items from personality and ad-justment inventories has remained largely unanalyzed in the wake of recent efforts to detect, discourage or bemoan such behavior (Hanley, 1957; Voas, 1958; Edwards, 1957). Variations in the ap-parent strength of this tendency under different circumstances of assessment suggest that the phenomenon is in part a situational one. Even within a single assessment context, however, considerable individual differences in this tendency may be observed, sug-gesting, among other things, a person-situation interaction which reflects motivational characteristics of the subjects. Moreover, there is some evidence which suggests that when subjects are explicitly told to make a good impression, those who do &dquo;best&dquo; are likely to be more psychologically sound than those who do less well at this task (Grayson and Olinger, 1957; Canter, 1963). The recent re-vival of interest in &dquo;role-playing&dquo; studies has produced a consid-erable amount of data which supports the observation that even under instructions designed to induce a uniformly high degree of good impression motivation, subjects will vary extensively in their performance (Wiggins, 1959; Walker, 1961; 1962). The present study was designed to test a hypothesis concerning one possible source of these observed individual differences. Whether &dquo;psyching out&dquo; a potential employer or cooperating with the explicit instructions of a role-playing experiment, making a
Does Compulsory School Attendance Affect Schooling and Earnings?
, 1990
"... This paper presents evidence showing that individuals' season of birth is related to their educational attainment because of the combined effects of school start age policy and compulsory school attendance laws. In most school districts, individuals born in the beginning of the year start sc ..."

Labeling Images with a Computer Game
, 2004
"... We introduce a new interactive system: a game that is fun and can be used to create valuable output. When people play the game they help determine the contents of images by providing meaningful labels for them. If the game is played as much as popular online games, we estimate that most images on ..."

Unrealistic optimism about future life events.
- Journal of Personality and Social Psychology,
, 1980
"... Two studies investigated the tendency of people to be unrealistically optimistic about future life events. In Study 1, 258 college students estimated how much their own chances of experiencing 42 events differed from the chances of their classmates. Overall, they rated their own chances to be above ..."

Range-Free Localization Schemes for Large Scale Sensor Networks
, 2003
"... Wireless Sensor Networks have been proposed for a multitude of location-dependent applications. For such systems, the cost and limitations of hardware on sensing nodes prevent the use of range-based localization schemes that depend on absolute point-to-point distance estimates. Because coarse accura ..."

Robust wide baseline stereo from maximally stable extremal regions
- In Proc. BMVC
, 2002
"... The wide-baseline stereo problem, i.e. the problem of establishing correspon-dences between a pair of images taken from different viewpoints is studied. A new set of image elements that are put into correspondence, the so called extremal regions, is introduced. Extremal regions possess highly de-sir ..."

Sparse signal reconstruction from limited data using FOCUSS: A re-weighted minimum norm algorithm
- IEEE TRANS. SIGNAL PROCESSING
, 1997

The problem we address is underdetermined, and no prior knowledge of the shape of the region on which the solution is nonzero is assumed. The iterations are based on weighted norm minimization of the dependent variable with the weights being a function
A generalized Gaussian image model for edge-preserving MAP estimation
- IEEE Trans. on Image Processing
, 1993

The proposed model, which we refer to as a generalized Gaussian Markov random field (GGMRF), is named for its similarity to the generalized Gaussian distri ..."

The model satisifies several desirable analytical and computational properties for MAP estimation, including continuous dependence of the estimate on the data, invariance of the character of solutions to scaling of data, and a solution which lies
