It extends a former numerical abstract domain based on Difference-Bound Matrices and allows us to represent invariants of the form (±x ± y ≤ c), where x and y are program variables and c is a real constant. We focus on giving an efficient representation based on Difference-Bound Matrices—O(n²) memory cost, where n is the number of variables—and graph-based algorithms for all common abstract operators—O(n³) time cost. This includes a normal form algorithm to test equivalence of representation and a widening operator to compute least fixpoint approximations.

A Wavelet based tool for the analysis of long range dependence is introduced and a related semiparametric estimator of the Hurst parameter. The estimator is shown to be unbiased under very general conditions, and efficient under Gaussian assumptions. It can be implemented very efficiently allowing the direct analysis of very large data sets, and is highly robust against the presence of deterministic trends, as well as allowing their detection and identification. Statistical, computational and numerical comparisons are made against traditional estimators including that of Whittle. The estimator is used to perform a thorough analysis of the long range dependence in Ethernet traffic traces. New features are found with important implications for the choice of valid models for performance evaluation. A study of mono vs multi-fractality is also performed, and a preliminary study of the stationarity with respect to the Hurst parameter and deterministic trends.

i Preface A wireless communication network can be viewed as a collection of nodes, located in some domain, which can in turn be transmitters or receivers (depending on the network considered, nodes may be mobile users, base stations in a cellular network, access points of a WiFi mesh etc.). At a given time, several nodes transmit simultaneously, each toward its own receiver. Each transmitter–receiver pair requires its own wireless link. The signal received from the link transmitter may be jammed by the signals received from the other transmitters. Even in the simplest model where the signal power radiated from a point decays in an isotropic way with Euclidean distance, the geometry of the locations of the nodes plays a key role since it determines the signal to interference and noise ratio (SINR) at each receiver and hence the possibility of establishing simultaneously this collection of links at a given bit rate. The interference seen by a receiver is the sum of the signal powers received from all transmitters, except its own transmitter. Stochastic geometry provides a natural way of defining and computing macroscopic properties of such networks, by averaging over all potential geometrical patterns for the nodes, in the same way as queuing theory provides response times or congestion, averaged over all potential arrival patterns within a given parametric class.

Fast global oscillations in networks of integrate-and-fire neurons with low firing rates

We study analytically the dynamics of a network of sparsely connected inhibitory integrate-and-fire neurons in a regime where individual neurons emit spikes irregularly and at a low rate. In the limit when the number of neurons N → ∞, the network exhibits a sharp transition between a stationary and an oscillatory global activity regime where neurons are weakly synchronized. The activity becomes oscillatory when the inhibitory feedback is strong enough. The period of the global oscillation is found to be mainly controlled by synaptic times, but depends also on the characteristics of the external input. In large but finite networks, the analysis shows that global oscillations of finite coherence time generically exist both above and below the critical inhibition threshold. Their characteristics are determined as functions of systems parameters, in these two different regimes. The results are found to be in good agreement with numerical simulations.
