Very simple classification rules perform well on most commonly used datasets
- Machine Learning
, 1993
"... The classification rules induced by machine learning systems are judged by two criteria: their classification accuracy on an independent test set (henceforth "accuracy"), and their complexity. The relationship between these two criteria is, of course, of keen interest to the machin ..."

to the machine learning community. There are in the literature some indications that very simple rules may achieve surprisingly high accuracy on many datasets. For example, Rendell occasionally remarks that many real world datasets have "few peaks (often just one) " and so are &

Peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) represents the spread of malignancies to the parietal and visceral peritoneum. Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and ‘Hyperthermic IntraPEri-toneal Chemotherapy ’ (HIPEC) was introduced in the early 1990s as a potentially curative treatment in selected pa-tients including PC secondary to colorectal cancer (CRC) and other malignancies such as pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (MM) and gob-let cell carcinoid (GCC) [1]. CRS aims to remove all visible tumor tissue (<2.5 mm). The HIPEC procedure is based on the principle that a high concentration of cytostatic drugs can eradicate the non-visible malignant cells in the upper layers of cells, while systemic absorption, and thereby tox-icity, is limited. CRS and HIPEC may increase the 5-year survival up to 51 % in selected patients with PC originating from CRC [2] and 87%-94 % in patients with PMP [3,4]. The outcome of CRS and HIPEC depends on the tumor extent and the completeness of cytoreduction [5]. Selection
A New Point Matching Algorithm for Non-Rigid Registration
, 2002
"... Feature-based methods for non-rigid registration frequently encounter the correspondence problem. Regardless of whether points, lines, curves or surface parameterizations are used, feature-based non-rigid matching requires us to automatically solve for correspondences between two sets of features. I ..."

. In addition, there could be many features in either set that have no counterparts in the other. This outlier rejection problem further complicates an already di#cult correspondence problem. We formulate feature-based non-rigid registration as a non-rigid point matching problem. After a careful review
Improving Elevator Performance Using Reinforcement Learning
- Advances in Neural Information Processing Systems 8
, 1996
"... This paper describes the application of reinforcement learning (RL) to the difficult real world problem of elevator dispatching. The elevator domain poses a combination of challenges not seen in most RL research to date. Elevator systems operate in continuous state spaces and in continuous time as d ..."

Folksonomies - cooperative classification and communication through shared metadata
, 2004
"... This paper examines user-generated metadata as implemented and applied in two web services designed to share and organize digital media to better understand grassroots classification. Metadata- data about data- allows systems to collocate related information, and helps users find relevant informatio ..."

, detailed rule sets and vocabularies. The primary problem with this approach is scalability and its impracticality for the vast amounts of content being produced and used, especially on the World Wide Web. The apparatus and tools built around professional cataloging systems are generally too complicated
An Algorithm for Probabilistic Planning
, 1995
"... We define the probabilistic planning problem in terms of a probability distribution over initial world states, a boolean combination of propositions representing the goal, a probability threshold, and actions whose effects depend on the execution-time state of the world and on random chance.
