Navigation without vision: Bumblebee orientation in complete darkness
- Proc R Soc Lond B Biol Sci 266
, 1999
"... In £ight cages, worker bumblebees (Bombus impatiens) spontaneously explored the surroundings of their nest and foraged in complete darkness by walking instead of £ying from feeders up to 150 cm away from the nest. This behaviour was wholly unexpected in these classically visual foragers. The ¢nding ..."

Pictures and spoken descriptions elicit similar eye movements during mental imagery, both in light and in complete darkness
- Cognitive Science
, 2006
"... Abstract This study provides evidence that eye movements reflect the positions of objects while participants listen to a spoken description, retell a previously heard spoken description, and describe a previously seen picture. This effect is equally strong in retelling from memory, irrespective of ..."

Four Dark Corners of Requirements Engineering
- ACM Transactions on Software Engineering and Methodology

A Field Study on Photoluminescent Signage Used to Guide Building Occupants to Exit in Complete Darkness

INTRODUCTION Interviews with victims after large fires have demonstrated that occupants could benefit from additional wayguidance information to efficiently move to safety, especially when evacuating during a power failure or in smoke conditions (Proulx, 1998; Fahy and Proulx, 1995). Installing a Photoluminescent Material (PLM) wayguidance system along evacuation routes appears to be a potential means of improving occupants' fire safety. A PLM system consists of signage elements that can be installed in the form of signs, paint, strips or fabric on any surface. The particularity of this non-radioactive material is that it contains pigments which have the capacity to store, in a few minutes, the energy from normal lighting. The material will restore this energy as a yellowish-green glow when all lights are extinguished. The initial bright glow emitted by the material will gradually diminish in brightness, but will remain visible for 3 to 40 hours, depending upon the type of material us
Scheduling in the Dark
, 1999
"... We considered non-clairvoyant multiprocessor scheduling of jobs with arbitrary arrival times and changing execution characteristics. The problem has been studied extensively when either the jobs all arrive at time zero, or when all the jobs are fully parallelizable, or when the scheduler has conside ..."

On Being 'Undigital' With Digital Cameras: Extending Dynamic Range By Combining Differently Exposed Pictures
- PROCEEDINGS OF IS&T
, 1995
"... Most everyday scenes have a far greater dynamic range than can be recorded on a photographic film or electronic imaging apparatus (whether it be a digital still camera, video, etc.). However, a set of pictures, that are identical except for their exposure, collectively show us much more dynamic rang ..."

range than any single picture. The dark pictures show us highlight details of the scene that would be washed out in a "properly exposed" picture, while the light pictures show us some shadow detail that would also not appear in a "properly exposed" picture. We propose a means
The Dark Top
, 808
"... We present a class of composite Higgs models in which the particle that regulates the top quark contribution to the Higgs potential is also a weakly-interacting dark matter candidate. This color-neutral “dark top ” is related to the standard model top quark through a large global symmetry. Because t ..."

the same couplings that control the Higgs potential also determine various dark matter cross sections, the dark top scenario is quite predictive once the dark top mass and various quantum numbers are specified. We construct two concrete examples of dark top models with plausible UV completions and study
Behavioral theories and the neurophysiology of reward,
- Annu. Rev. Psychol.
, 2006
"... ■ Abstract The functions of rewards are based primarily on their effects on behavior and are less directly governed by the physics and chemistry of input events as in sensory systems. Therefore, the investigation of neural mechanisms underlying reward functions requires behavioral theories that can ..."

The Nature Of Dark Matter
- Nature 370 629 [astro-ph/9402009
, 1994
"... Collisionless particles, such as cold dark matter, interact only by gravity and do not have any associated length scale, therefore the dark halos of galaxies should have negligible core radii. This expectation has been supported by numerical experiments of collisionless particles within scale free a ..."

and cold dark matter cosmologies. Most dwarf spiral galaxies are almost completely dark matter dominated, allowing a unique insight into their mass – density profiles which can be approximated by isothermal spheres with core radii of order 3 – 7 kpc. We can therefore make a direct comparison between
