Statistical learning theory was introduced in the late 1960’s. Until the 1990’s it was a purely theoretical analysis of the problem of function estimation from a given collection of data. In the middle of the 1990’s new types of learning algorithms (called support vector machines) based on the developed theory were proposed. This made statistical learning theory not only a tool for the theoretical analysis but also a tool for creating practical algorithms for estimating multidimensional functions. This article presents a very general overview of statistical learning theory including both theoretical and algorithmic aspects of the theory. The goal of this overview is to demonstrate how the abstract learning theory established conditions for generalization which are more general than those discussed in classical statistical paradigms and how the understanding of these conditions inspired new algorithmic approaches to function estimation problems. A broadly applicable algorithm for computing maximum likelihood estimates from incomplete data is presented at various levels of generality. Theory showing the monotone behaviour of the likelihood and convergence of the algorithm is derived. Many examples are sketched, including missing value situations, applications to grouped, censored or truncated data, finite mixture models, variance component estimation, hyperparameter estimation, iteratively reweighted least squares and factor analysis.
Text Classification using String Kernels
"... We propose a novel approach for categorizing text documents based on the use of a special kernel. The kernel is an inner product in the feature space generated by all subsequences of length k. A subsequence is any ordered sequence of k characters occurring in the text though not necessarily contiguo ..."

ChernSimons Gauge Theory as a String Theory
, 2003
"... Certain two dimensional topological field theories can be interpreted as string theory backgrounds in which the usual decoupling of ghosts and matter does not hold. Like ordinary string models, these can sometimes be given spacetime interpretations. For instance, threedimensional ChernSimons gaug ..."

Large N field theories, string theory and gravity
, 2001
"... We review the holographic correspondence between field theories and string/M theory, focusing on the relation between compactifications of string/M theory on Antide Sitter spaces and conformal field theories. We review the background for this correspondence and discuss its motivations and the evide ..."

A Guided Tour to Approximate String Matching
 ACM COMPUTING SURVEYS
, 1999
"... We survey the current techniques to cope with the problem of string matching allowing errors. This is becoming a more and more relevant issue for many fast growing areas such as information retrieval and computational biology. We focus on online searching and mostly on edit distance, explaining t ..."

String theory and noncommutative geometry
 JHEP
, 1999
"... We extend earlier ideas about the appearance of noncommutative geometry in string theory with a nonzero Bfield. We identify a limit in which the entire string dynamics is described by a minimally coupled (supersymmetric) gauge theory on a noncommutative space, and discuss the corrections away from ..."

KodairaSpencer theory of gravity and exact results for quantum string amplitudes
 Commun. Math. Phys
, 1994
"... We develop techniques to compute higher loop string amplitudes for twisted N = 2 theories with ĉ = 3 (i.e. the critical case). An important ingredient is the discovery of an anomaly at every genus in decoupling of BRST trivial states, captured to all orders by a master anomaly equation. In a particu ..."

Generative communication is the basis of a new distributed programming langauge that is intended for systems programming in distributed settings generally and on integrated network computers in particular. Macroscopic strings as heavy quarks in large N gauge theory and Antide Sitter supergravity
 PHYS. J. C22
"... Maldacena has put forward large N correspondence between superconformal field theories on the brane and antide Sitter supergravity in spacetime. We study some aspects of the correspondence between N = 4 superconformal gauge theory on D3brane and maximal supergravity on adS5 × S5 by introducing mac ..."

We first study deformation and fluctuation of D3brane when a macroscopic BPS string is attached. We find that both dynamics and boundary conditions agree with those
