We compare discriminative and generative learning as typified by logistic regression and naive Bayes. We show, contrary to a widely held belief that discriminative classifiers are almost always to be preferred, that there can often be two distinct regimes of performance as the training set size is increased, one in which each algorithm does better. This stems from the observation which is borne out in repeated experiments that while discriminative learning has lower asymptotic error, a generative classifier may also approach its (higher) asymptotic error much faster.

This dissertation is a defense of the hypothesis that the noun phrase is headed by afunctional element (i.e., \nonlexical " category) D, identi ed with the determiner. In this way, the structure of the noun phrase parallels that of the sentence, which is headed by In (ection), under assumptions now standard within the GovernmentBinding (GB) framework. The central empirical problem addressed is the question of the proper analysis of the socalled \Possing " gerund in English. This construction possesses simultaneously many properties of sentences, and many properties of noun phrases. The problem of capturing this dual aspect of the Possing construction is heightened by current restrictive views of Xbar theory, which, in particular, rule out the obvious structure for Possing, [NP NP VPing], by virtue of its exocentricity. Consideration of languages in which nouns, even the most basic concrete nouns, show agreement (AGR) with their possessors, points to an analysis

A ‘long memory ’ property of stock market returns is investigated in this paper. It is found that not only there is substantially more correlation between absolute returns than returns themselves, but the power transformation of the absolute return lrfl ” also has quite high autocorrelation for long lags. It is possible to characterize lrfld to be ‘long memory ’ and this property is strongest when d is around 1. This result appears to argue against ARCH type specifications based upon squared returns. But our MonteCarlo study shows that both ARCH type models based on squared returns and those based on absolute return can produce this property. A new general class of models is proposed which allows the power 6 of the heteroskedasticity equation to be estimated from the data. 1.

The following problem is discussed: Given n points in the plane (the sites) and an arbitrary query point 4, find the site that is closest to q. This problem can be solved by constructing the Voronoi diagram of the given sites and then locating the query point in one of its regions. Two algorithms are given, one that constructs the Voronoi diagram in O(n log n) time, and another that inserts a new site in O(n) time. Both are based on the use of the Voronoi dual, or Delaunay triangulation, and are simple enough to be of practical value. The simplicity of both algorithms can be attributed to the separation of the geometrical and topological aspects of the problem and to the use of two simple but powerful primitives, a geometric predicate and an operator for manipulating the topology of the diagram. The topology is represented by a new data structure for generalized diagrams, that is, embeddings of graphs in twodimensional manifolds. This structure represents simultaneously an embedding, its dual, and its mirror image. Furthermore, just two operators are sufficient for building and modifying arbitrary diagrams.
