My first encounter with the work of Timur Kuran took place in 1995 when I read his study Private Truths, Public Lies. This is a celebrated book that in all brevity can be described as an exploration by an economist of a general social mechanism. According to the author, there exist many situations in social life when it is not enough to look at the preferences of an actor; you also have to look at his or her hidden preferences, and at what adds up to preference falsification, to use the author’s terminology. The result of situations with preference falsification is in many cases startling and counterintuitive, since actors mistake falsified preferences for genuine preferences and act accordingly. This time Timur Kuran is bringing together two topics that by tradition tend to be studied apart in the scholarly literature: economies, on the one hand, and civilizations, on the other. And again one may hope for creative and counterintuitive results. What role do economic factors play in civilizations? How do we study these? Do different civilizations perform differently, from an economic perspective, and if this is the case, why? These are some of the key questions that need to be answered when you confront
